New Submission: Homophobic street harassment

My girlfriend and I were out with a friend on St. Paddy’s Day 2017, waiting for the bus on Rideau Street at Dalhousie. She and I were holding hands as we often do, and a man walking by on the sidewalk passed us, stopped to turn around so that we could see him, made a V with his fingers and flicked his tongue through it in our direction.

I’ve recently moved to Ottawa and this is the first instance of homophobic street harassment I’ve encountered. I’m often nervous about being affectionate with my girlfriend in public, and this doesn’t help. Sure, it was just a gesture this time but what if it’s something worse next time? Either way, we don’t deserve it.
